Painting Oak Rocking Chairs

Make a rocking chair look new by painting it.

When you have a weathered-looking oak rocking chair, you may think that you need to toss it into the garbage and replace it with a newer-looking rocking chair. However, brand-new oak rocking chairs can be very costly. One solution is to refinish your oak rocking chair to look new again by painting it. You can buy the materials to paint it at any hardware shop or arts and crafts supply store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sand the entire rocking chair using fine-grain sandpaper. This will remove any old paint, roughness, uneven texture or splintering.

2. Vacuum the entire rocking chair using a shop vacuum with a brush attachment. The brush attachment will enable you to vacuum inside the creases and cracks in the rocking chair to remove any sawdust, dirt or debris left behind from sanding.

3. Wipe off the entire oak rocking chair using a damp washcloth. This will wipe off any remaining dust that was stuck onto the chair. Allow the rocking chair to air dry for 30 minutes.

4. Fill the bottom of a paint tray with latex paint. Select any color that you prefer. Coat the end of a 1-inch round paintbrush with the paint.

5. Apply the latex paint in an even layer over the surface of the chair. Dab the paintbrush into the cracks and creases to ensure that all of the areas have been painted sufficiently. Allow the paint to air dry for 8 hours, then apply a second coat as before. Allow the paint to dry for an additional 8 hours before use.
