Decorating A Bedroom In Mission Style

Mission-style home decor falls within the Spanish or Southwest decor styles. Generally, mission-style furniture features clean lines, high-quality materials and fine craftsmanship. Pieces are usually monotone in color, and may feature copper or pewter metal hardware. In contrast to Victorian decor, the mission style is not ornate or detailed. If you wish to decorate your bedroom in mission style, you can do so quite easily with a few solid pieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Purchase a mission-style bed frame. Mission-style furniture is typically made of oak, and usually light in color. The natural wood grain and knots are highlighted rather than hidden.

2. Find mission-style dressers and nightstands. Hardware, such as drawer and cabinet handles, are incorporated into the furniture's design. Most hardware is either copper, pewter or other muted metals. Mission-style furniture will never feature brassy or shiny hardware.

3. Acquire mission-style chairs for lounging in the bedroom. The chairs usually have straight backs as well as flat slats. Oftentimes, mission-style chairs do not feature padded seats, so you can add seat cushions if you wish. If you're willing to pay a bit more, you can find mission-style chairs with leather seats.

4. Look for mission-style desks with geometric inlays. While mission-style furniture does not feature much ornamentation, it does often have inlays within pieces. You can protect delicate inlays by covering the desk top with a glass cover.

5. Choose lamps with stained glass shades. Generally, mission-style lamps feature brass, oak or muted copper bases.

6. Add throw rugs to the bedroom. Choose rugs in deep, earthy tones, such as green, red, burnt yellow and blue. If possible, find rugs in Southwest or Spanish styles.

7. Place mission-style accent items throughout the bedroom. Wooden boxes and vases complement the mission style well, as do bronze statues in geometrical designs.
