Donate A Car In Jacksonville Florida

Old or unused cars can be donated to charity.

Donating a car to charity is one option to consider when you have a vehicle that is old or unused. Charities that accept car donations sell the cars at auction and use the proceeds to support the organization's mission. Even old cars that no longer run can be profitable, as they can be broken down and sold for their parts.

Instructions

1. Select a charity in Jacksonville, Florida, that will accept your car donation. A few reputable charities that accept car donations include the Florida Council of the Blind, the Homeless Family Center, The American Lung Association of Florida and the Habitat for Humanity in Jacksonville. Another option is to utilize a third-party vendor to manage the car donation for you. These organizations can make the process easier, though it is important to understand exactly how much of the proceeds from the sale will be going to the charity of your choice, as these organizations take a portion of the proceeds for managing the transaction.

2. Contact the charity directly and arrange to have the vehicle picked up -- a service that most nonprofit organizations provide free of charge. In some instances, a charity may require you to transport the vehicle to a drop-off location.

3. Sign over the title of the car to the charity. If the title is no longer available, you will need to apply for a duplicate copy from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

4. Remove the license plates from the car and either transfer them to another vehicle or return the plates to your local tax collector or the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to prevent your license from being suspended. You can also mail the plates along with a cancellation request to:

5. Get a tax receipt for the donation when the car is picked up. As long as you donated the vehicle to a 501(c)(3) approved organization, the IRS will allow you to deduct the value of the donated car up to $500. To deduct a higher amount, you will need written proof from the charity stating that the car sold for more than $500.
