Building Wooden Chairs

Building your own wooden chair can be satisfying.

If the thought of relaxing on a hand-crafted wooden chair intrigues you, it may be time to buy some wood from your local hardware store. Many supplies stores and websites offer simple plans to help you achieve your goals of making your own wooden furniture. Do-it-yourself projects are fun and rewarding, and there is nothing like reaping the benefits of a sturdy well-built wooden chair--especially you built it.

Instructions

1. Select the style of chair you wish to build. Each style has a purpose, so decide where you want your chair to sit, and what purpose you have in mind for your piece.

2. Purchase the amount of wood necessary. Many plans state the total amount of wood needed to successfully complete the job.

3. Cut all pieces with hand or table saw and drill any holes for screws and bolts. Make sure all cutting and drilling is done at once to help save time and space in your work area.

4. Sand all pieces with medium-grain paper, working down to fine grain until smooth to the touch.

5. Fit and screw all pieces together--using a screwdriver and wrench to effectively secure nuts and bolts--to create your desired chair.

6. Varnish, polish or treat with whichever product best suits your needs and/or climate.
