History
Henry Lapp was an old-order Amish furniture cabinet maker from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He lived in Pennsylvania his entire life, from 1862 to 1904. Amish furniture has not changed much since the Lapp style. Most Amish boys learn carpentry from an early age, and by the time they reach adolescence and manhood, they are quite skilled laborers.
Features
Amish outdoor furniture is made from solid, full-grained wood. It is often left unpainted, with the quality of the grain and the natural color of the wood the main focus. Outdoor Amish furniture is entirely hand-crafted, hand-drilled and hand-sanded. Brackets may be added on, and countersunk screws, which are embedded into the wood. The screws do not stick out, making outdoor Amish furniture ideal to have around a child's playground area.
Benefits
Sometimes the outdoor furniture is coated in a sealing agent to protect against the elements. Most times, the wood is sanded and left bare. The furniture can be protected with a water-proof outdoor wood sealant, since it is unpainted upon completion. This will preserve the beauty and the natural color of the wood.
Function
The Amish make all kinds of furniture, from small to large pieces. They make hand-crafted porch swings, glider benches, glider chairs, garden benches, arm chairs, saddle racks and gazebos. The Amish are able to make outdoor furniture that is comfortable and affordable. Their seated pieces are made for support; with curved back rests, and different sized furniture for all types of shapes, sizes and budgets.
Identification
Sometimes the furniture has a heart design, which is Old Dutch style décor. The heart design is cut out into the furniture, and typically adorns the back of chairs or garden benches. The big hearts give a piece of Amish furniture a modern and contemporary look, and the little heart carvings give a piece a more traditional look. The Amish carpenters also make barrel design chairs, and incorporate various period styles into their work, including Colonial, Mission style and more.
Geography
Since the Amish do not sell online The furniture can only be purchased through second hand outlets, or bought directly from the Amish. In Lancaster, there are markets where the Amish sell furniture, and it is most readily available in quantity from Indiana.
