Ways To Kill Bedbugs Using Household Items

There could be tiny blood-sucking parasites living right underneath you when you sleep.

"Don't let the bedbugs bite." This popular phrase has been around for many decades--and for good reason. Bedbugs are tiny creatures that make their homes inside and under mattresses and actually feed off human blood. These pests can be very troublesome at night, which is when they usually feed. Fortunately, you can get rid of them without buying expensive chemicals. In fact, you can kill bedbugs with items found in your house. Does this Spark an idea?

Steaming

Bedbugs cannot survive heat above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so steam--which is well above 100 degrees--is lethal to them. Rent a steam cleaner and blast the areas where bedbugs are most likely to be. This includes your mattress, comforter, bed sheets and the area around the bed. Be careful around wood and other furniture fixtures. Steam the items thoroughly, then set them outside to dry if necessary.

Freezing

Bedbugs are also extremely vulnerable to cold temperatures. Try turning down the thermostats in your home for a few hours while searching through your room and around your bed. The cold will slow down the bugs that may be trying to escape. Also, you could set your blankets, mattress and box spring outside on a very cold, windy day. Bedbugs will have no place to hide and will expire soon after being exposed to the harsh weather.

Vacuum

This method is the most direct way to kill bedbugs. Grab your vacuum with hose attachments and go on a bedbug hunt. Search around your bed, inside the mattress and in the cracks and corners of your room and suck up all of the dirt and debris that you can find. The bedbugs will try to hide, but a thorough search-and-destroy mission should capture at least a few of them. Empty the contents of the vacuum into a bag, seal it and dispose of it outside.

High-Heat Cleaning

There are other ways to use heat to kill bedbugs. Wash your blankets and bedsheets in very hot water (or very cold if they cannot be washed in hot water) and dry them on a high heat setting. Also, you can place your mattress and box spring on a large, clean tarp and cover them with black plastic bags in direct sunlight on a very hot day. Bedbugs will expire quickly due to the heat.
