Arrange Furniture In A Small Home Office

A home office should be comfortable, organized and productive.

Your home office is the most productive room in your house-as long as you have an efficient furniture arrangement. Small offices are more difficult to arrange than spacious studies, but a small space can be just as attractive and functional with the proper elements. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a desk of the appropriate size. The space required for a laptop is much less than a conventional desktop, monitor, mouse and keyboard. L-shaped desks, curved corner desks, or those converted from a table work well in small home offices.

2. Long hours in the home office calls for a comfortable chair.

Invest in an ergonomically designed office chair. Even the best office arrangement is all for naught without a comfortable chair you can sit in for hours.

3. Create more work space with vertical storage. Hang floating shelves, install a tall bookcase, and mount cubbies to the wall to save room. Tuck the desk under the shelving so it's easily accessible without walking far.

4. Hanging file frames keep you organized in a small home office.

Convert a dresser into a file cabinet. Install hanging file frames in the drawers and implement a filing system with tabbed hanging folders to save room and reduce paper clutter. The taller the dresser, and less floor space it requires, the better.

5. Scoot the desk up to a window with a deep sill to provide a stimulating view and refreshing natural light. The sill acts as an improvised shelf for storage bins as well. Stack bins on top of one another to capitalize on vertical space.

6. Your work may not end after sunset, so task lighting is key.

Bring task lighting into the room. A standing lamp placed near the work area or a desk lamp in the small office allows you to work well after sundown.

7. Draft a layout with a pencil and paper. Draw up several ideas to prevent moving heavy furniture more than once. Keep outlets for computers and printers in mind as you sketch ideas.

8. Move your furniture to their appropriate locations based on your storage, lighting and power needs. When hooking everything up, use a surge protector to shield your electronics from power surges.
