Though the title of grand marshal has origins in the military, religious and secret societies, today a grand marshal is typically regarded as a master of ceremonies, in general, and a parade leader, in particular. In both cases, it is a position of leadership and widely considered an honor whether the title is bestowed upon a person for a day or a longer term.
Duties
In religious and societal organizations, the grand marshal typically acts as a meeting chairperson or master of ceremonies for a special event. The most common duty of a grand marshal is leading a parade procession, and this usually involves some degree of pomp and circumstance to celebrate the parade's commencement and honor the grand marshal. Depending on the nominating organization, the grand marshal may also be involved with the overall planning of the parade.
Qualifications
Grand marshal is an informal title of rank, so specific qualifications depend on the organization. In general, as a position of honor, a grand marshal is chosen for her exceptional leadership qualities. A local organization often chooses someone within its community who has performed a heroic task or brought awareness to the organization's mission. On a national level, a grand marshal usually has the added credential of some level of celebrity, such as that of an athlete or entertainer.
Purpose
As an honorary position, a grand marshal largely serves a public relations purpose. Both local and national organizations can boost interest in their missions by bestowing the honor upon someone who will elicit media coverage and inspire people to join in the festivity, as well as the organization itself. The purpose is often more altruistic, however. Because the grand marshal himself is often covered in the news, other people can be exposed to and inspired by his example of leadership.

The Tournament of Roses Parade began as a promotional effort by the local Valley Hunt club in Pasadena, California, in 1890. Today, it is one of the most known and watched parades every year, celebrating Pasadena, the state of California and the United States. It also celebrates a grand marshal every year. In its infancy, grand marshals were local heroes, but as its popularity grew, grand marshals were chosen on a national level. In fact, the Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal position is arguably the most coveted.
