Beat Terran With Zerg In "Starcraft 2"

Dominate Terran players with Zerg forces in "Starcraft II."

The Zerg are the nightmarish, bug-like creatures that make up one of three factions in Blizzard's "Starcraft" PC games. The main advantage of the Zerg over the Terran and Protoss factions is speed and low cost; Zerg armies can be built quickly and cheaply, and reinforcements can be brought to the front lines of battle almost as quickly as they are defeated. A player who masters the Zerg can be a threat in almost any game situation.

Instructions

Basic Zerg Strategy

1. Hit fast and hard. The Zerg can build up large numbers of Zergling and Hydralisk forces very quickly, allowing fast players to dominate the game map almost immediately. A popular multiplayer technique is the Zergling Rush where you pour all you efforts and resources into building a large group of Zerglings (roughly 20 to 40) immediately and then use them to scope out the map. If you're fast and lucky, you'll find enemy players' bases before they can build up any defenses, then win the game or severly handicap them right away.

2. Keep up your forces. The Zerg's strength lies in numbers, but that won't do you any good if you don't replenish your armies. Having multiple Hatcheries in the same place is a great way to build forces six, nine or 12 at a time, a skill your Terran foes can't duplicate.

3. Extend the creep. The creep, the purple mucas-like ground that emanates from Hatcheries, is necessary to extend your base and defenses. Additionally, Zerg ground and air forces move up to 30 percent faster while on the creep, so the more creep you have, the faster your units can move around the map. Be sure to always reserve a few drones for creep tumors when creating a new batch.

4. Attack in groups. A large group of Zerglings and Hydralisks can be more intimidating than a couple of Ultralisks, and they're much harder to kill. When charging, don't get discouraged when your front lines are killed by marines or siege tanks; your units are fast enough to close the gap quickly if you have enough of them. Focus on weaker targets first, then move on to defensive and infrastructure targets.

5. Build air defenses. The Zerg are weak when it comes to air units, so Terran players are often tempted to build up an air force and overwhelm the Zerg from the sky. Create plenty of spore crawlers, leave a few defensive Hydralisks around key buildings and resources, and upgrade long-range attacks to allow for ranged defense.

Advanced Zerg Strategy

6. Spread out the borders of your base. Zerg work best in large groups, so bottlenecking base entrances on a bridge or canyon doesn't work to your advantage. Focus on large areas of flat land with plenty of defensive structures and roving ground units patrolling. A wide field of spore crawlers, spine crawlers and Hydralisks will be much harder to attack than a narrow neck of the same defenses.

7. Use psychology to your advantage. The Zerg are creepy, disgusting creatures; don't be afraid to remind your Terran enemies of this. Just a few tech-heavy units like the queen, the corrupter or the infestor can slowly infect enemy units with distracting, debilitating status changes, keeping your opponent constantly on edge and lowering his effectiveness.

8. Burrow often. Burrowed units heal faster and effectively hide from most early Terran units. One strategy is to build up a large army of ground units with lots of roaches for backup. Burrow most of the army, then send a small force of Zerglings to engage a large Terran force. After a few of your units are killed, retreat to your burrowed forces. After the enemy is right on top of your hidden units, spring the trap and decimate them.
