Styles Of Easy Chairs

Easy chairs are common pieces of furniture in American decor.

While chairs today offer us modern comfort, the chair is by no means a modern invention. According to Galen Cranz, the "oldest physical chairs we have come from the tomb of the young pharaoh Tutankhamen, who died about 1352 B.C." Today, contemporary chairs such as easy chairs abound in homes all around America, offering a wealth of styles to fit a variety of needs and tastes. Does this Spark an idea?

Recliner

A recliner is a style of easy chair that adjusts to provide maximum comfort. For example, when you sit on most recliners and push back on them, the back support of the chair leans backward, so you can rest in a more relaxed position. When you perform this action, most recliners have a cushion that rises up that functions on a lever, so that your feet lift off the ground; you can then relax in an uplifted position. Some recliners even come with neck supports and headrests for maximum comfort. They are typically manufactured in durable but soft upholstery or leather.

Wingback Chair

The wingback chair was one of the first easy chairs designed. Padded, cushioned and upholstered, it first originated as a sickroom chair as it gave the ill person a place in the room where he could rest in an upright position near the warmth of the fireplace in utmost ease, states Bob Brooke, author of the book, "Recognize and Refinish Antiques for Pleasure and Profit." The wings on either side of the chair helped to funnel the heat in the room toward the sick person so that he would stay warm. Homeowners adopted the chair into sitting rooms in the 1800s, and the chair is still commonly found in living rooms today. The chair provides classic style and elegance as well as a soothing, soft place to sit. Many wingback chairs have matching footstools to support the feet.

Armchairs

Armchairs are the traditional easy chair found in living rooms in America. Armchairs are often part of a larger living room set and are typically manufactured of soft upholstered or leather material that matches the sofa. Armchairs have wide, cushioned backs, soft armrests and feature a T-shape, square or rectangular cushion at the seat. Many varieties of armchairs come with a matching ottoman for increased comfort.
