What Do To Impact Your Job Positively On A Daily Basis

You -- not your supervisors or colleagues -- are responsible for your positive attitude in the workplace. The way you approach your job duties and the manner in which you interact with your colleagues and peers determine how much you enjoy working. Additionally, acknowledging how talented you are and recognizing your worth as an employee and an individual are two primary ways to impact your job positively every day.


Your Job


Read your job description to ensure it contains all of your primary duties. It doesn't have to list every task you perform, but it should be reviewed and updated as necessary to reflect your responsibilities. A job description is intended to be an outline of responsibilities -- it's not a list of tasks. Therefore, you might perform some duties to a greater degree than others, or you might occasionally take on additional responsibilities only in the absence of another employee. For tasks that typically aren't part of your normal job duties, list your experiences separately as tasks you are capable of handling when called upon to do so. Keep a daily journal of new duties, responsibilities and tasks. Reviewing your list at the end of the month and at year's end could surprise you by revealing how many new tasks you learn.


Supervisor Meeting


Schedule a meeting with your supervisor to discuss your plan for discovering ways to impact your job positively on a daily basis. She might have suggestions based on her observations and your performance appraisal meetings. For example, your supervisor might share her observation that you are always willing to help another team member. In this case, you can expand on that and ask if there are additional ways to assist the department and new employees, such as participating in orientation.


Working Relationships


Every day, introduce yourself to a new employee if you work for a large organization where it's rare that employees from different floors, work groups and departments interact. Becoming acquainted with someone new each day expands your understanding of the organization overall and improves your knowledge of how departments are interdependent.


Skills


Work on improving one job skill each day for as long as it takes you to develop proficiency or improve your performance. For example, if you work in a data entry position, focus on improving your accuracy level until you produce error-free documents. Likewise, if one of your weaknesses is public speaking, set aside time every day to study public speaking and deliver speeches fluidly and articulately. Once you become comfortable through practice and private rehearsals, volunteer to speak in front of groups of employees. Ask your supervisor for assignments that help you improve your public speaking skills.


Business Philosophy


Select one tenet of your employer's philosophies, mission statement or values to exemplify each day for a week. For example, focus on mutual respect the first day of the workweek and exhibit behavior that demonstrates your commitment to respect for all employees, regardless of status, position or rank. You might be surprised at the pleasant reactions you get from colleagues and managers, plus you'll set an example for others to emulate.


Talent


Think about the natural talents you have and the skills you've learned during the course of your employment or throughout your career. Many employees think they are simply working at a job that utilizes their skills in a robotic way. Realizing the influence you have on the duties you perform as they relate to your talents, gifts and contributions, you can greatly enhance your positive attitude about work and your place in the workforce.
