Make Shaker Trim For Cabinet Doors

Flat-panel cabinets are far less expensive than their decorative cousins. Whether you already have flat-panel cabinet doors or are planning to order some, you can dramatically upgrade their look by applying shaker-style trim. Shaker is one of the easiest trim styles to apply to a cabinet door, requiring no complicated cuts. Do the job yourself--your cabinets will look great and you will save money in the process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the cabinet doors from the cabinet frames with a screwdriver and lay them on a flat work surface.

2. Scrub the front of the cabinets with ammonia-based cleaner and a soft rag. Remove any oils or residue that might interfere with the glue.

3. Measure the width of the cabinet door, using a tape measure. Cut trim pieces straight across with your circular saw to match this exact width. Set the trim piece in place on the door without securing it.

4. Measure the length of the cabinet from the bottom of the shaker trim to the top of the trim piece beneath it. Cut a piece of trim to fit into this space, using the circular saw. Set the trim pieces in place without securing. The fit should be good with no visible spaces between the trim.

5. Spread construction adhesive on the back of the trim. Press the trim into place. Clamp the trim to the door with the woodworking clamp. Allow the adhesive to dry. Repeat the process on all the remaining doors and drawers.

6. Hammer finish nails into the trim or use a nail gun. Fill the nail holes with wood putty. Let the wood putty set and hang the doors in their original location.
