Donate A Couch To Charity

Donating your old couch could also give you a tax credit, applicable in the tax year the donation was made.

Donating your old couch to charity gives another individual or family a chance at enjoying your beloved possession. Recycling is also good for Mother Earth: giving away furniture, instead of bringing it to the dump, is an environmentally friendly practice. Donated couches should always be cleaned before delivering them to the new owner. Covering them in plastic provides protection from the elements and stains.

Instructions

1. Remove any debris from in between the couch cushions. Vacuum in between the couch cushions with a hand vacuum. Use a steam cleaner and clean the couch, if possible. Many donation centers will not accepted soiled or stained items.

2. Wrap the couch in plastic. If you do not have access to rolls of industrial plastic, use a tarp. The plastic is available in hardware stores, as are tarps, and the plastic is also available in moving supply stores. Tape the plastic on all edges and on the sides. Wrapping the couch in plastic protects it from stains and damage.

3. Call your local Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity. Both of these organizations are national entities that accept donations of couches. On the website for each organization, you will find an office locator. The Goodwill website has a zip code locator. If these organizations don't exist in your area, call your local church or senior center; offer the couch as a donation. Not-for-profit entities such as churches and senior centers are often in need of donations.
