Things To Do In San Diego At Christmas Time

During the first weekend in December, San Diego's colorful Balboa Park transforms into a winter wonderland.

Though San Diego may not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of Christmas, the city offers a multitude of traditional holiday activities as well as some uniquely Southern Californian and San Diego experiences. Whether you're looking for something free or a kid-friendly outing, the city offers many events to choose from. Does this Spark an idea?

Go See Christmas Lights

Several neighborhoods in San Diego provide breathtaking residential light displays. Several notable neighborhoods include the island of Coronado, Candy Cane Lane off H Street in Chula Vista, Kennsington, South Park and La Jolla. For unique nautical-themed displays, visit the Point Loma neighborhood where retired many marine and fishermen reside. Garrison street is particularly entertaining. Many people get off and walk to take in the colorful displays. The Rancho Pensaquitos neighborhood has over two-hundred families participate in lighting their Christmas Card Lane. They do request you park your car and walk around. You can rent a horse-drawn carriage, buy cocoa and baked goods, and listen to Christmas carols.

December Nights at Balboa Park

This two-day holiday kick-off celebration takes place the first Friday and Saturday nights of each December. There's a Christmas tree lighting, food and vendors and entertainment. Participating museums also offer free admission from 5 to 9 p.m. If you plan on attending, plan ahead for parking or transportation. Over 400,000 people attend each year, and there are only 5,500 parking spots available at the park. The best part of the event is that it's free (not including the cost of food or souvenir items).

Mission Bay Boat Light Parade

On during the second or third weekend in December each year, over one-hundred boats decorated with lights sail through the bay. The parade is followed by a fireworks display at 9 p.m. Notable viewing spots include Crown Point, Santa Clara Point, Riviera Shores, the east side of Vacation Island and the west side of Fiesta island. Over 60,000 people attend each year.

Holiday Music Events

San Diego offers a variety of concerts and music events during the holidays, including the Blues Christmas in the Gaslamp Quarter. This event offers music at ten different venues with free admission. Spreckles Organ Pavilion also hosts a free organ concert series each Sunday at 2 p.m. Organists perform show tunes, Christmas carols and other classics on the world's largest outdoor pipe organ.
