A futon is a modern day sofa bed, which works as both a sofa and a bed. It consists of three elements: the frame, the mattress or pad, and the cover. The frame is usually made of metal or wood. The mattress is available in different thicknesses and materials. Some are cotton, innerspring, memory foam or a polyester blend. The cover protects the mattress, but is also part of the decor. Covers are made of durable materials such as micro suede or denim. Buying a futon can be fun because you design it yourself by deciding on which frame, which mattress and which cover works in your living space.
Types
The click clack futon allows you to adjust the futon into a bed or recline it. Simply use the adjustable mechanism to lower the back to a flat or reclined position. The bi-fold futon is the most common futon. The mattress is folded in half, lengthwise, when the futon is in a seated position. To put the futon in a flat position, simply pull the seat section forward and push on the back. It will recline into a flat position. The tri-fold futon is for small spaces. The mattress is folded into three parts, width wise. Some have a mechanism to fold the frame flat, while others just pull forward as you push on the back to lay it flat. Use a futon in any room of the house. In the living room, choose a thick mattress for comfortable seating during the day. Wood-framed futons with a high-end mattress and quality cover look and sit like a regular sofa. To prepare for bed, simply move away from the wall and lower the back. In the guest room, they take up less space than a bed. Simply pull down the back as you push the seat forward and the bed is ready. There are no sofa cushions to remove. Love seat futons work well in a home office area because they are only about 45 to 50 inches wide. They sit two people and sleep one comfortably. Usually a section under the love seat pulls out to make the futon longer.
