Change A Front Porch To Cottage Style

A cottage-style porch creates a real atmosphere for relaxing.

Cottage style refers to a type of decor for interiors and exteriors that is characterized by a strongly relaxing feeling as well as sense of quaint rusticness. While some use the terms country style and cottage style interchangeably, this is not correct. Country-style decor focuses more on hand-carved furniture, stoneware pottery and vintage cotton quilts, whereas cottage-style decor communicates a light, airy quality as well as a cozy one with cheerful fabrics like gingham and florals, using flowers, herbs and even nautical items like seashells as decorative items. Cottage style often takes found items and converts them, such as making an old door into a coffee table. You can transform the most boring front porch into one that oozes cottage-style charm. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Mix 1/4 cup TSP with 1 gallon water in a bucket. Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Dip a scrub brush into the mixture and scrub down your entire porch. Rinse it with the clean water from your hose. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

2. Apply an even coat of oil-based primer to the porch with your paint roller. Give it two-to-four hours to dry. Apply a coat of cream oil-based paint with your paint roller to the entire porch: the interior and exterior, the columns and the sides. Give the paint 24 hours to dry and apply a second coat.

3. Add an vintage park bench to the porch. Outfit the bench with cushions in either a delicate floral pattern or pastel gingham. Throw a braided rug in a complementary color in front of the front door.

4. Make a table out of old shutters or vintage cupboard doors by nailing them to a sawhorse or wooden step stool. Use this as a coffee table for your porch.

5. Purchase inexpensive paintings from flea markets and display them all around your porch. Add decorative knickknacks like an old candelabra or porcelain pitcher to help decorate the space.
