Bookcase Styles

A bookcase displaying a selection of books.

Invariably, you will need a bookcase. A bookcase is a great alternative to stacking piles of books--or CDs, DVDs and knickknacks--on your floor. Several primary styles of bookcases are available in a variety of materials, such as wood, metal and plastic. Consider these bookcase options to help you determine the appropriate bookcase for your needs before heading out to purchase one. Does this Spark an idea?

Barrister Bookcase

The traditional version of a bookcase, barrister bookcases vary in size and can either be small with three shelves or they can take up almost an entire wall, depending on your need. Additionally, they can have doors or be completely open. These bookcases often have decorative moldings on the bases and tops. They are suitable for living areas where you can proudly display books and objects for visitors to see. In addition, many barrister bookcases have levelers for less-than-even floors.

Bookcase With Doors

If you desire to display beautiful books or do not need to use them every day, you should consider a bookcase with doors. The doors are transparent and made of glass, or nontransparent and can be solid material. Depending on how organized you want to keep your bookcase, this door selection is a crucial decision. Either option works well in living area spaces.

Bookcase Wall

A bookcase wall is an impressive bookcase to have in a personal library, den or office area. Covering an entire wall, or a section of wall, this style of bookcase is dependent on each individual wall’s measurements. It can be physically attached to a wall, or stand alone, covering a wall’s length.

Cabinet Bookcase

This bookcase style is a welded combination of two storage styles (cabinet and bookcase). While having the traditional shelves of a bookcase, this bookcase style also has cabinets as large, deep storage areas within the unit. This bookcase style works well in entertainment areas where storage for large items and shelves for books, DVDs or CDs are needed.

Corner Bookcase

A corner bookcase is preferable for less-spacious areas. Usually ranging from small, three-shelf options to taller six-shelf options, you can transform a corner into a decorative area. While useful to store books, you can also display decorative objects in a corner bookcase.

Cube Bookcase

A cube bookcase is a versatile option for any room. Some cube bookcases contain connected cubes, resembling a tic-tac-toe board. Other cube bookcases contain individual cubes that can be stacked and rearranged in any fashion that meets your room’s demands. Additionally, cube bookcases may also contain pull-out drawers for some of the cubes for storage.
