Is Alder Wood Good For Cabinets

Alder, a rapidly growing tree species commonly found in the Pacific Northwest, has many uses. You may have tossed it in your fireplace as a burning wood or seen it used in plywood, causing you to question whether it's a good choice for cabinets in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Understanding Alder

Alder is a popular commercial hardwood tree. It's an environmentally friendly option, as the alder trees have a rapid growth rate and help increase nitrogen and organic matter in the soil, which improves the fertility of poor soils. With a moderate density and uniform texture to the wood and grain, alder lends itself to many different uses.

Commercial Uses

Alder, in addition to being used for fiber-based and composite products such as paper and particle board, is also used in solid-wood products. Cabinets made from alder may be made either from the solid wood, or from another species of wood covered with a thin veneer of alder. Red alder is commonly used as a substitute to achieve the look of expensive cherry hardwood at a more affordable price. Look for alder cabinets at your local furniture store or have them specially made.
