Definition of Master Craftsman
A master craftsman is a highly trained and skilled craftsman of wood carvings and cabinets. A master craftsman does not share his knowledge about carpentry with the public. Does this Spark an idea?
Apprenticeship
Usually, a master craftsman appoints an apprentice to learn the knowledge and tools of the craft. This apprentice begins with carving small decorative wood items or making cabinets.
Journeyman
Accomplishment of basic tasks and skills earns the apprentice a promotion to the status of a journeyman. The status of journeyman could be said to be comparable to that of graduate master level at a modern university.
Journeyman functions
The journeyman is taught carve furniture pieces. This includes furniture alignment and restoration work. The journeyman craftsman learns design custom-built furniture, design, illustrate and decorate walls with hand carvings.
Master Craftsman
The journeyman craftsman works with a master craftsman for two years before being recognized as a master craftsman himself. This recognition is often commissioned by a guild of master craftsmen with a brass plaque.
Family Tradition
In contemporary society guilds of master craftsmen are rare. Craftsmen function alone and pass on the tradition to the male members of their family. These family craftsmen do not follow the rigid guidelines of a guild but tend to teach and learn their craft at their own pace.
