Decorating Ideas For A Southwest Pueblo Style House

Colors derived from the dessert decorate a southwest pueblo-style house.

Southwest pueblo-style decor is casual and rustic and is a style typical in the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. Spanish, Mexican and Native American influences make up most of the decor in a southwest pueblo-style house. The look is not difficult to achieve as long as you use the proper design elements to create the relaxed and laid back atmosphere of southwest style. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors

Southwest pueblo-style homes use bold, bright colors inspired from the land. Use colors derived from the sky, including deep, rich blues, such as cobalt, sky blue, turquoise, aqua and Taos blue, which is a mixture of sky blue and a hint of violet. Red and orange comes from the colors of the soil and bright yellows and oranges are found in the desert plants and sunsets. Neutral colors of the desert, including shades of brown and beige are also used in southwest pueblo-style homes.

Furniture

Decorate your southwest pueblo-style home with rustic, wooden furniture. Furniture styles are usually Spanish or Mexican antique furniture, which are generally massive and heavy pieces. Beds, cabinets, armoires, night stands and chests are usually carved with geometric patterns. Chairs are made of wood and often upholstered in leather or hide. Likewise, a sofa and armchairs in a southwest home can be completely upholstered in leather. Furniture is sometimes painted in bright, bold colors and other times furniture remains unstained for a rustic look and feel.

Fabrics

Handwoven rugs, brightly colored comforters, blankets and patchwork quilts are typically found in southwest pueblo-style homes. Cover floors with handwoven rugs or with animal skin. Blankets and quilts are used on beds as well as on sofas. The most well-known southwest-style fabrics are probably the Native American Navajo rugs with strong geometric patterns and brightly colored serape, which is a handmade, cotton, blanket-like shawl with fringed ends that are often worn in Mexico. In southwest decorating, however, serape is used in decorating.

Accessories

Choose wooden doors with clavos, or nail heads forged from iron or aluminum, for your southwest pueblo-style home. Decorate with Native American art, Indian pottery and handwoven rugs. Accessorize with rustic wall decor and switch plate covers with a wildlife or western theme, such as horses, coyotes, bucking horses, lizards or cacti. Lean a hand-made wooden ladder, known as a kiva ladder, on a wall. Use the kiva ladder to hang dried wildflowers, dry chili pepper pods, known as chili ristra, or brightly colored fabrics. Display religious objects, sculptures, pottery or woven baskets in wall niches, or recesses cut into a wall, which are typical in southwestern pueblo-style homes.
