Alternatively, art students can range further afield to avail themselves of university-level arts courses in a wide range of disciplines. The various courses that schools around Alamance provide are suitable for high-school students, continuing education-seekers or prospective college students.
Alamance Community College
The Alamance Community College, located on the Jimmie Kerr road in Graham, does not offer higher education degrees specifically in art. However, the college does offer continuing education courses in various arts and crafts. These courses include such areas of art as acrylic painting, basket weaving, calligraphy, oil painting, pottery, stained glass, woodworking and watercolor painting. These courses are designed for adult education, and members of the public can suggest course ideas to the program administrators. The registration process can be by mail, fax or in person at the college office. The college also offers an associate degree in Arts, which encompasses humanities and fine arts along with mathematics, social sciences, natural sciences and English.
The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham
The Art Institute of Charlotte has two campuses in North Carolina, one of which is located in Durham, two counties east of Alamance and about half an hour's drive away. The institute offers courses in design, fashion marketing and management, media design and the culinary arts. The college offers bachelor's degrees, associate degrees or diplomas. Prospective students can choose from a list of degrees in areas of art such as photography, graphic design or interior design. The college also offers computer design courses such as game art and design and web design and interactive media.
The Art Institute of Charlotte
The Art Institute of Charlotte is a sister campus to the Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham, less than two hours by car from Alamance County, and offers the same courses as the Durham campus. However, the Charlotte institute also offers a bachelor's degree in digital film-making and production.
University of North Carolina
The School of the Arts in the University of North Carolina, located in Winston-Salem, under an hour by car from Alamance County, offers courses in design and film-making along with drama and music. The college offers bachelor's degrees in Fine Arts in the areas of Design and Production, Dance, Film-making and Drama. Music students gain a Bachelor of Music degree. The college also provides diploma courses for students who either do not wish to undertake a bachelor's degree, or for those who already have an undergraduate degree. The diplomas are awarded in the areas of Design & Production, Dance, Drama, Music and Filmmaking.
