Craftsman Decorating

The ornate decorating of the Victorian era gave way to simplicity.

The Craftsman style home came into vogue during the Arts and Crafts movement, a period following the ornate Victorian era. Thousands of bungalows were built using the simple principles of the Craftsman style and continue to be a popular choice with homebuyers. Does this Spark an idea?

History

It is important to keep the history of Craftsman in mind when choosing to decorate in the style. Following the Victorian era, replete with all its decadent over-stuffing of rooms and ornateness, the Craftsman style came along, with clean lines and simplicity. Any items chosen to decorate a Craftsman-inspired room should be simple and have purpose.

Colors

In direct opposition to the dramatic hues of Victorian era paint choices, Craftsman colors were exclusively shades found in nature: grays, browns, muted greens, tans, and the softened shades of red and yellow found in a sunset. Any color used in Craftsman decor should feel soothing and calm.

Furniture

Plain, unadorned and practical best describes Craftsman-style furniture. Pieces could be comfortable, but were not showy.

Woodwork

Without a doubt, the star of the Craftsman home decor is the natural woodwork. One of the reasons a Craftsman home can look so homey without being stuffed with furniture is because of how dramatic the woodwork in the house is. Everything, from floors to window casings, is solidly crafted and made to last.
