Decorate A Rustic Camp

Rustic camp decor is conducive to quiet relaxation.

The term "rustic camp" first came into use soon after the Civil War, when great fortunes were amassed in railroads and industry. In summer, families of great means -- Rockefellers, Vanderbilts and Whitneys -- deserted the heat of Fifth Avenue mansions for the rustic camps of New York's Adirondack Mountains. There, on vast tracts near lakes, they had built colossal log lodges, fashioned and furnished by local craftsmen of indigenous timber and stone. Many such rustic camps have been built since, on a more modest scale, for people seeking bucolic respite. Recreating the decor of the originals is a simple process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Furnish the cabin with sofas, chairs, tables and beds fashioned from logs with bark or in the Mission oak style. Use tabletops cut from polished cross sections of tree trunks.

2. Upholster the seating in American Indian patterns or rustic fabric with motifs of hunting and fishing themes.

3. Cover the windows with stained wood blinds or shutters, accented with simple treatments in rustic checks, plaids and stripes.

4. Illuminate the rooms with chandeliers, sconces and lamps of primitive wrought iron designs with parchment shades, laced with cowhide, or fashioned from stag antlers.

5. Frame rustic-themed art and mirrors in frames made from twigs and branches with bark.

6. Accessorize with antlers, pewter, American Indian Rugs, earthenware and basketry.
