Types Of Futon Frames

Ensure the futon mattress is comfortable.

Whether decorating a small or larger space with a futon frame, consider how you plan to use the futon in the room. Opting for a futon frame can save you space with seating and sleeping arrangements, but you first need to allocate the amount of space available for the futon. Futon frames, depending on the type, can use from 46 to 90 inches of wall space. In addition, some futon frames are more convenient than others; therefore, you might want to ensure you can convert the futon from a sofa to bed without difficulty. Does this Spark an idea?

Loveseat Futon Frame

Loveseat futon frame are usually available in twin sizes and full sizes. The mattress has two pieces. You can sit on the biggest piece when the loveseat futon frame is in the bi-fold position. Additionally, combine the smaller and larger pieces together when you position the futon frame as a bed or footstool. Additionally, the twin loveseat futon frame is an estimated 46 to 49 inches wide from each arm. A full loveseat futon frame can accommodate two people for sleeping and sitting purposes. It spans about 60 to 64 inches from both arms.

Tri-Fold Futon Frame

Tri-fold futon frames typically cost less than traditional bi-fold or loveseat futon frames. They are also more complicated to convert from the couch position to the bed position. This lightweight frame requires a thinner mattress because it folds in three ways. The mattress sits on the frame along the short portion of the mattress, rather than the length of the mattress demonstrated in a bi-fold futon frame.

Bi-Fold Futon Frame

Most stores stock bi-fold futon frames more than any other type of futon frames. The futon mattress folds in the middle the length of the mattress. Bi-fold futon frames come in full, queen and chair sizes. You can use the bi-fold futon as a sofa or bed. A full-size bi-fold futon frame is about 81 to 85 inches long from arm to arm, while a queen-size futon spans roughly 86 to 90 inches. The full and queen-size bi-fold futon frames seat at least three people and sleeps two people. A chair-size bi-fold futon frame comes equipped with an ottoman and sits one person. However, manufacturers do not recommend it for sleeping purposes.

Frame Constructions

Furniture stores carry futon frames made from various materials, such as metal or wood. Metal futon frames may have round or square arms, while some come without arms. There are a variety of wood futon frames, including pine, hardwood, log and oak.

Futon Mattress

Futons are functional and flexible pieces of furniture, but consider the type of mattress when you purchase a futon. If you plan to sit on the futon more than sleeping on it, opt for a softer futon mattress with foam and cotton. When you will use the futon for majority of sleeping purposes, most people opt for a firmer mattress, which has more support.
