The Practical Nursing programs in Ontario are generally two-year diploma programs offered at the college level. Upon completion of the program, students must write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination administered by the College of Nurses in Ontario (CNO). Upon successful completion of this exam, the student becomes eligible to practice nursing in Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN). RPNs are employed in a variety of healthcare settings, including home healthcare, long-term care facilities, hospitals and doctor's offices.
Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology
Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology offers a two-year college diploma in Practical Nursing. The program is designed to prepare students to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination for licensure in Ontario. The curriculum offers a combination of academic learning and practical experience to equip students with the knowledge and skills they will need for a career as a Registered Practical Nurse. The program delivers its core curriculum through in-class learning, laboratory applications and online lessons. Prospective students must possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or an appropriate equivalent to be considered for admission to the program. Applicants must have completed senior courses in English, mathematics, biology and chemistry prior to applying. Once an offer of admission is made, the applicant must submit Health Assessment and Immunization forms prior to commencement. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification must also be acquired before beginning any practical placements.

Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology
The Practical Nursing program at Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology is based upon the principles expressed in the Nursing Act of 1991. The program strives to convey the importance of nursing, caring, and learning, and their respective roles in client health. Cambrian College utilizes an approach to nursing care that focuses on the importance of holistic care, health promotion, rehabilitation and preventative measures. Students will have the opportunity to apply these concepts in a number of clinical settings throughout the program. The two-year diploma program is competitive, with only 48 seats available each year. Applicants must possess a secondary school diploma with a minimum of 60 percent in English, biology, chemistry and mathematics. Applicants also must have a Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate Level C and a Standard First Aid Certificate. As of 2010, the current tuition for the program is $3,739.00.

Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology
The distinctive Practical Nursing diploma program at Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology employs the use of human-patient simulators to provide lifelike skill-building opportunities throughout the entire program. Practical Nursing students will learn the importance of patient assessment, course of care planning and outcome evaluation techniques. Clinical experiences are available in many areas of healthcare, including maternal and child care, surgical mental health and long-term care placements.
