Collect Antique Muskets

Gun enthusiasts and history buffs enjoy collecting antique muskets. There is something satisfying about holding a piece of history in your hands and thinking about all the people throughout the years who have held that musket. If this describes how you feel, you may wish to start an antique musket collection.

Instructions

1. Know the blue book value of the antique musket you own or plan to purchase. The "Blue Book of Gun Values" is the standard pricing guide in the industry. Get one and look up the prices.

2. Determine the history of your musket. This must be documented on paper and the older the paperwork you can find, the better. A history of the weapon will greatly increase the price of your antique musket.

3. Rate the condition of your musket and be honest. The National Rifle Association's Condition Standards for antique guns goes from excellent to poor. Read the blue book to determine the characteristics that put a musket in each category and decide where yours fits.

4. Beware of the impostor. Muskets are in short supply these days, and creating replicas for battle reenactments and collections has become a big business. While some replications are worth money, the serious collector buys authentic antique muskets.

5. Have your money ready. Muskets in good condition with a confirmed and documented history can sell in the six-figure range.
