Decorate A Mission Style Large Entry Foyer

A fruit centerpiece is all that is needed to add color to the foyer.

Mission-style decor is based on a period in the late 19th to early 20th century. This period is also known as the Arts and Crafts period. The furniture is sometimes called Stickley furniture for Gustav Stickley, who was a furniture manufacturer. This decor is simple but not boring and uses basic wood furniture but lots of color. Specially designed furniture for this period is available. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Lay flooring that mimics what would have been found in the Mission era. Natural wood floors or synthetic look-alikes, limestone or slate flooring was common. A modern twist to the style can include mosaic tiles.

2. Paint the walls with custom paint that mimics the colors and texture of the period. Those paints used natural pigments that have earthy tones. You can also opt for wallpaper done in a contemporary take on the period, such as floral wallpaper in muted, natural hues.

3. Add simple furniture to the foyer. Use furniture that fits in the room, such as a narrow table and small, wooden chair. Oak was commonly used in this period but you don't need to have oak-colored furniture. Different colors were made by mixing ammonia or other solutions to the stain. Even pinkish hues were available during the Mission period.

4. Add a simple, flush-mounted light fixture to the center of the foyer. Choose a light fixture that has a square, cylinder or octagon shape and soft light. Simple chandelier-style light fixtures were also available as well as those that hang on chains.

5. Decorate the foyer with a simple centerpiece on the table, such as a vase of flowers or bowl of oranges. Hang one or two pieces of art on the wall but don't clutter the wall.
