Arts & Crafts Furniture Painting Ideas

Transform a wooden dresser into a work of art.

Whether you are looking to restore an antique armoire or give a new face to a nightstand from the thrift store, paint can completely transform the surface of wooden furniture. Painting is an easy and inexpensive way to create a one-of-a-kind piece to decorate your home.

Crackle Painting

Crackle painting is a distressing technique often used on furniture. To crackle paint, you will need two different colors of paint, as well as crackle medium. Paint the furniture with one color, and allow it to dry thoroughly. Use a brush to apply a coat of crackle medium across the surface of the furniture in a random pattern. The thicker you apply the crackle medium, the larger and more noticeable the cracks will be. When the crackle medium is tacky, apply the second color of paint across the furniture. When it dries, you should see cracks in the top color, allowing the bottom color to show through.

Geometric Shapes

Add dimension and a pattern to your furniture using stencils. Paint the surface of the furniture in a solid color of your choice. Trace geometric-shaped stencils onto the dry paint and fill them in with other colors of paint.

Stripes

Stripes are very easy to paint on furniture using painter's tape. Simply apply the masking tape to create the stripes on the furniture and fill in the exposed wood with paint. This will create sharp, even lines on the furniture.
