Spanish-style homes refers to an architectural style of house building that is heavily influenced by New World Spanish Colonial architecture. Also important is the Spanish Revival (sometimes called the Spanish Colonial Revival) style, an architectural movement of the early 20th century that has influenced the contemporary Spanish-style home. Spanish-Style Interiors and Exteriors
Spanish style can influence the architectural design of both the exterior and interior of a house. The Spanish influence can also flow over into other areas of home design such as landscaping, furniture selection and paint color.
Spanish Revivals
In the early 20th century, an architectural style was developed in America by European-trained architects, which incorporated a lot of the building techniques found in Latin America. The result was the Spanish Revival style, which created landmark homes for the wealthy in places like Florida, Texas and California.
Exterior Features in Modern Homes
Some of the exterior features found in contemporary homes derived from Spanish architecture styles include clay tile roofs, stucco with heavy wood trim and the occurrence of many arches.
The Interior
On the inside of the house, common Spanish influences include stucco walls, arched passageways, exposed beams, clay tile floors and the use of decorative tiles and bricks. Sometimes room decorations and furniture are chosen to match the overall Spanish style of the domicile.
Similar Styles
Hacienda, Spanish Mission and Spanish Ranch are just a few of the subgroups of Spanish-style homes. In most cases these terms refer to a specific and functional type of building once found in New Spain and Latin America.
