Identification Of Wood Dining Chairs

Contemporary wood chairs are clean-lined and unadorned.

Wood dining chairs are a durable, easy-to-maintain, classic form of seating. Well-made wood chairs are costly investment pieces that last for generations. A variety of styles are available to fit any type of decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Traditional

Traditional wood dining chairs are easy to identify. Typically made of dark-stained wood such as cherry or mahogany, these chairs have curves and adornments to differentiate them from other styles. The name of the chair often describes its back. Lyre back, shield back and fiddle back are examples. Queen Anne styles have cabriole, or curved, legs, and a curved splat. Chippendale chairs include serpentine top rails, elaborately carved splats and cabriole legs. Most traditional wood dining chairs have an upholstered seat.

Country

Country dining chairs have a relaxed, informal look. Often made of wood that is painted or stained a light, natural color, these chairs have high backs and wooden seats. The Windsor chair has spindles enclosed within an arched back. The wheat-back chair has vertical spindles that narrow and pass through a horizontal piece about two-thirds of the way down the back. Ladder-back chairs, a country classic, have horizontal slats on a tall back reminiscent of the rungs of a ladder.

Mission

Mission-style wood dining chairs rely on symmetry and geometric design for their appeal. They are often made of sturdy oak with a natural stain. The classic Mission-style chair has flat, evenly spaced, vertical slats running from the back's top to bottom. Another Mission style with an Asian flair is the windowpane design, with back slats forming a symmetrical grouping of squares. This style is often painted black.

Modern

Modern wood dining chairs have a streamlined, unadorned character. An open back with a rectangular or oval piece at the top is one example. Other modern wood styles have a simple, spare, square back and seat, similar in style to Shaker furniture. Some modern chairs have cut-outs of squares or circles in the back.
