Sew Glider Cushions

Sewing your own glider cushions is an inexpensive and practical way to dress up your outdoor living space. Embrace your creativity and be your own designer--choose from outdoor fabrics or spray a protective coating on a beautiful fabric you already own. You'll have a new comfortable seat for your porch or deck that's completely one of a kind. All it takes to create a colorful accent for your home is a simple pattern made of muslin and one easy seam line.

Instructions

1. Make a pattern for your glider cushion. Lay a piece of inexpensive muslin over the seat of the glider. Trace the outline and cut out. True up the shape of the pattern if necessary.

2. Place the muslin pattern over a piece of 2-inch thick foam. Trace around it and cut out the foam with scissors or a craft knife.

3. Place the muslin pattern on the fabric. Trace and cut two pieces.

4. Cut a boxing strip 3 inches wide (2 inches to accommodate for the thickness of the foam, plus seam allowances). Use the length of the muslin pattern plus a 1/2 inch seam allowance for the length of the boxing strip. Stitch the short ends of this strip with right sides together.

5. Pin a long edge of the boxing strip to the top pattern piece with right sides matching and cut edges aligned. Stitch using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Pin the constructed piece to the remaining pattern piece with right sides together. Leave an opening large enough to turn and insert foam.

6. Press the seams open and turn the cushion right side out. Insert foam. Slip stitch the opening closed.
