Diy Trundle Bed

Trundle beds provide extra sleeping space for company. The beauty of trundle beds is that they slide right under an existing bed and do not take up any valuable floor space on a regular basis. You can pull the spare trundle bed out when you need it, and put it back under the bed when you do not need it. Does this Spark an idea?

Preparing

Measure underneath the bed where you want to store the trundle bed. If it is not high enough you may need to buy lifts to raise the regular bed up a little higher. You also want to make sure the existing bed is long enough to accommodate a twin bed as well.

Use 4 by 8s for the sides of the box for the trundle bed. You will also need a piece of plywood and a few 2 by 4s. You do not need a box spring to make a trundle since this makes the bed too tall to slide the trundle underneath the existing bed.

Measuring

Buy a twin-size mattress for the trundle. Measure the mattress before cutting your lumber to make sure you cut it to the right size. Add a couple of inches to the mattress measurements to use as a guide for cutting your lumber. Buy handles to add to the one side of the trundle to make it easier to pull the bed out when needed. You will also need screws and a drill fitted with a screwdriver bit. The drill makes the job of attaching the boards together much easier. Borrow a table saw from a friend or neighbor if you do not have one to make quick work of cutting the lumber to the correct sizes.

Building

Cut out all the pieces of wood to your desired measurements. Attach one of the short sides to one of the long sides. Add the other short side and finish off with the last long side. Screw some 2 by 4's to the inside of the trundle bed frame as supports.

Paint or stain the wood as desired. Make sure to let the paint dry completely and cure for a day or two.

Flip the whole trundle over and screw in wheels at each of the four corners to facilitate rolling it in and out from under the bed. You may need to use the drill to make holes in the four corners first. Screw the wheels into the holes. Flip the trundle back over and add the handles. It is necessary to attach handles to only one side of the trundle.

Take some measurements of the inside of the trundle bed frame. Cut a piece of plywood to these measurements. Lay the plywood on top of the 2 by 4 supports. Top with the mattress.
