Update Kitchen Cabinets With Molding

Molding can instantly transform your cabinets.

The kitchen is more than just the room where your store and prepare food. The kitchen is the place where many homeowners start their days with a cup of coffee or a bowl of cereal. Making the kitchen into a space that you truly want to spend time in is important. For example, your cabinets take up so much space in your kitchen that tweaking them can dramatically alter the look of your entire kitchen. You can update them rather easily without refacing or painting: molding can give them a more textured, interesting look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Look through a book or catalog of cabinets with molding, making note of the styles that you like. Each style will give your kitchen a slightly different effect. For example, mission style molding will give your cabinets a new yet slightly traditional look. If you're looking for something more modern, flat, geometric panels might be more appropriate.

2. Measure the length of your cabinet doors and determine approximately how wide you want each panel of molding to be as well as how many panels you want. Use the catalog or book you had in step one, to be your guide.

3. Visit a home supply store and purchase the type of molding you've decided upon, cut to the dimensions you've determined. Mark where you want each panel with a piece of chalk.

4. Nail each piece of modeling in place using a brad at the top, middle and bottom of each panel. Once you've installed all the panels, place a counter setter on top of each nailed in brad and hit it with your hammer.

5. Add a small dab of wood putty on top of each brad with a putty knife. Sand down with 120-grit sandpaper when dry. Rub a tack cloth over the cabinets to remove the dust from sanding.

6. Prime each cabinet with oil-based primer and allow them to dry for three hours. Apply a several coats of the oil-based paint color of your choice, allowing each coat of paint to dry for 24 hours.
