Get The Mirror Look When Refinishing Furniture

Refinishing a piece of furniture that's been worn over time is a great way to restore its previous shine and luster. To ensure the new finish lasts for a long time and achieves the best possible result you must work carefully and with patience. To get the mirror look when refinishing you must take extra steps to prep the furniture's surface and regularly polish as you work. It will take some extra time and effort but the results will leave you with a piece of furniture that looks brand new.

Instructions

1. Sand the surface of the furniture smooth with the 220 grit sandpaper. Sand away any imperfections to ensure the new finish goes on evenly and clean.

2. Apply a light coat of sanding sealer with a brush. This will prevent the new finish from blotching or becoming too dark and allow the new finish to shine. Let the initial coat of sealer dry, then smooth the surface of the furniture with fine steel wool and apply a second light coat.

3. Wipe on a light coat of stain with a clean cloth. After the stain has had several minutes to penetrate the wood wipe off any excess stain with another cloth.

4. Rub the surface of the furniture with a clean cloth after the stain has dried. This will smooth the wood surface and even the appearance of the finish.

5. Brush on a thin coat of polyurethane with a brush. After the initial coat has dried, smooth the furniture's surface with the fine steel wool and apply another thin coat. Allow the second coat to dry.

6. Polish the surface of the furniture with a clean cloth and the furniture polish. This will bring the new finish to a gleaming shine.
