Donate Commercial Furniture

Hotel dining room furniture can be included in a commercial furniture donation.

Commercial furniture includes varied furnishings found in an office, other business setting or institutional environment. You'll encounter task and executive chairs, modular workstations and reception area seating. Hotel desks and chairs, upholstered dining chairs and conference room furnishings are also considered commercial furniture. When a company's furniture becomes a little worn, or upholstery colors become faded, some businesses recover and reuse the furniture. Other firms donate their still-functional furniture to a non-profit organization. This donation can provide a tax benefit to eligible companies. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Document the furniture's value. List the type, number and condition of your furniture pieces. Take photographs if possible. The Internal Revenue Service notes that a donor must assign donation values using each item's fair market value, not the "new" price. The fair market value is the dollar figure that an average buyer would pay for used merchandise. Purchase receipts will help you find this value. Some thrift stores also provide valuation assistance.

2. Donate furniture to a thrift store. Non-profit thrift stores sell donated goods to support the organization's mission. Thrift store merchandise is often limited by display space and donation pickup capabilities. Some stores accept a few pieces of commercial furniture, but cannot accept an entire dining room full of tables and chairs. Each non-profit thrift store sets its own donation acceptance policy, and standards also differ among the same organization's stores.

3. Donate furniture for non-profit office use. Non-profit organizations operate on a limited budget, and money spent on office furniture means less money for charitable work. Some non-profit groups accept office furniture donations for use in the organization's business offices or client service areas. For example, the Muscular Dystrophy Association accepts donations of office chairs, desks, credenzas and modular office components.

4. Donate to a local furniture bank. Some cities have non-profit organizations to support area families leaving undesirable living environments. These organizations often provide donated furniture and other household items for clients' newly rented houses or apartments. For example, the Dallas Furniture Bank accepts furniture and other items from individual and commercial donors. Smaller commercial furniture pieces such as loveseats and individual chairs can easily fit into clients' homes.
