Decorate To Look Like The 1900s

Dark wood furniture with straight lines was popular in the 1900s.

Home styles in the 1900s fell into four major categories. Many homes still retained the Victorian decor of the previous century, while many newer homes were being built and decorated with more modern, prefabricated furniture and styles. The Arts and Crafts movement, bungalow and Mission-style housing, and the beginnings of Modernist American architecture all shared similar themes and began in the 1900s. Whether you are decorating an older home and want to keep your decor appropriate to the home's original style or just looking for a 1900s aesthetic, there are certain things that will give your home the right look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select a specific style from the 1900s. If you prefer more ornate decor or are decorating a house that predates the 1900s, Victorian furnishings are the best choice. For a bungalow, Arts and Crafts or Mission-style home, more modern Mission-style decor is more appropriate.

2. Visit antique shops and online furniture dealers for examples of furniture from the 1900s. If your budget permits, buy authentic furnishings such as overstuffed Victorian settees or Stickley cabinets and chairs. Modern reproductions and furnishings inspired by the 1900s can help you get the look for less. Look for solid wooden pieces with clean lines and simple but strong shapes.

3. Embellish the room with adornments popular in the 1900s. Stained glass windows or lamps, floral tapestries and tile were all common ornamental features used in the 1900s. Wallpaper prints were often in muted colors but featured ornate floral patterns. Living rooms of the 1900s typically had a piano; look for an antique or a basic wooden upright.

4. Cover modern amenities with 1900s-era touches. Use lamps instead of overhead lights and cover light switches with sconces. Use a fireplace screen to cover the fireplace or to hide a television set.

5. Include 1900s furnishings in the bedroom. During the 1900s, iron bed frames were believed to be more hygienic than wooden bed frames. Use iron or other metal bed frames. Include a wash stand with a wash basin at the bedside for another turn of the century touch.
