Make Mission Patches

Astronauts have mission patches for each mission into space.

Mission patches have been used since humankind first entered space. These small circular pieces of cloth are designed and embroidered to commemorate each specific space mission. Many of the early patches are no longer available for purchase. Creating a mission patch can be done with simple craft items and the imagination to create the design.

Instructions

1. Set the compass to 1.5 inches and draw a circle on white paper. This will create a 3-inch patch template. Draw and color the patch design on this template.

2. Cut out the mission patch. Place the patch on a piece of felt fabric in the desired color. Trace around the template with a black felt tip marker. Cut out the felt fabric circle.

3. Trace any other parts of the patch that need to be sewn onto the circle on other pieces of felt fabric. These may include letters or shapes.

4. Glue these other parts of the patch directly onto the circle of felt or each other if there are layers of design. Allow the glue to dry.

5. Thread the needle with the color of thread chosen to stitch the patch. Stitch each piece of the patch previously glued so that it is stitched to the circle of felt. Insert the needle through all layers of felt if the design is layered. Stitch the patch onto a piece of clothing as desired.
