Make Mission Bookcases

A mission bookcase can organize books and display decorative items.

A modern, yet relaxed style of furniture is the mission style. Known for strong parallel lines on the sides of couches, end tables and coffee tables, the mission pattern is also used frequently on bookcases. While some of the more complex mission pieces you may want to purchase in a store, you can make mission bookcases on your own whether you're an experienced woodworker or a novice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Lay two 1-by-3-inch boards on the ground side by side. Space the boards 6 inches apart. Place two 1-by-1 42-inch boards between the 1-by-3 boards and space them evenly. Adjust the 42-inch boards so they run flush along the top but start 6 inches up from the bottom.

2. Lay a 1-by-1 1-foot board perpendicularly across the four boards 2 inches down from the top. Insert a screw through the 1-foot board and into each board underneath to attach. Set a second 1-foot board across the bottom, 2 inches up from the bottoms of the 42-inch boards. Secure with screws.

3. Place two more 1-foot boards across the four long boards between the first two 1-foot boards. Space the boards evenly or as you prefer for the positioning of the shelves. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to make a second side identical to the first.

4. Stand the two sides upright with the 1-foot boards facing inward. Space the boards 30 inches apart. Hold a 32-inch board horizontally against the back of the units halfway between the bottom two 1-foot boards. Insert two screws through each end of the 32-inch board and into the upright 4-foot boards.

5. Place the remaining 32-inch boards against the back of the units between the other 1-foot boards as you did with the first 32-inch board and secure with screws.

6. Set a 1-by-12 30-inch board into the framework so it rests on the lowest 1-foot boards on both sides. Leave the board unattached or insert two screws through each side of the 30-inch board and into the 1-foot board. Repeat with the other 30-inch boards, working your way up until all the shelves have been added to the bookcase.
