Apply A Missionfinished Stucco

Mission walls are smooth.

Mission-finished stucco is a smoothed surface that fits ideally with mission or Spanish-style homes. If you want to incorporate this look to the exterior of your home, adding it is easy, and it has plenty of benefits. It's low-maintenance and hold ups better than wood since you don't need to worry about wood rot or termites. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Prepare the wall for the colored plaster by adding a first coat of Portland cement to the walls. If your walls already have a cement or brick surface, apply a concrete bonding agent and allow it to dry. For wood or siding, roll a roofing felt over the wall, followed by metal netting, and secure it with galvanized roofing nails. Cut any excess with tin snips.

2. Mix the cement according to package instructions in a large mixing tub. Apply the first coat of stucco to the walls with a finishing trowel. Pack it onto the walls. Keep the thickness ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 inch to allow for uniform drying.

3. Scratch the surface of the stucco with a plasterer's rake to create grooves approximately 1/8 inch deep. Allow it to harden for 36 to 48 hours. Mist it frequently to keep the stucco moist. Mist as soon as it begins to lighten, which means it's drying out.

4. Rent a mechanical mixer to mix the color with stucco plaster. Add both the stucco and color into the mixer and add directed water to obtain proper consistency.

5. Moisten the walls prior to finishing the top coat. Add the colored stucco, covering the surface with a 1/8-inch-thick color coat. Smooth the surface to obtain the mission finish. Complete the entire wall with the colored top coat.

6. Mist the stucco walls frequently throughout the curing period, which lasts 28 days. After the 28 days, the walls will be fully hardened and dry.
