Build A Refrigerator Depth Cabinet

Kitchen cabinets can fully surround a refrigerator and double the storage space.

In a kitchen, base cabinets typically come in a 24-inch depth. This ensures a countertop proper fitting. If you are interested in creating a base cabinet that is refrigerator depth, you will need to have a countertop made specifically for the cabinet, which is why it is a much simpler process to create a full height cabinet for the space. Some home owners desire cabinets to fully enclose a refrigerator. Having deep cabinets allow a cleaner appearance in the kitchen, and almost doubles the amount of storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure and record the depth of the refrigerator. Measure from the very back of the refrigerator system to the very front of the door to ensure accurate depth.

2. Cut two sections of plywood that measure 84-inches high by the depth measured for the fridge. These sections will be used for the left and right sides of the cabinet.

3. Cut two sections of plywood that measure 17-inches wide by the depth of the refrigerator. These sections will be used for the top and bottom of the cabinet.

4. Cut one section of plywood that measures 17-inches wide by 84-inches tall. This section will be used for the back of the cabinet.

5. Cut one section of plywood for the door. This section should measure 17 1/2-inches wide by 83 1/2-inches tall.

6. Cut five sections of plywood that measure 17-inches wide by one inch less than the depth of the refrigerator. These will be used as shelves in the cabinet.

7. Attach the sides to the back of the cabinet. Apply wood glue to the 84-inch edges along the 17-inch by 84-inch edges. Firmly press one 84-inch by refrigerator depth piece of plywood to each side and nail along each edge every 6-inches.

8. Apply wood glue along the interior edges of the top and bottom of the cabinet. Slide one 17-inch by depth of the refrigerator into each glued area, lining the end with the edges of the cabinet. Nail along all three edges at each end, placing nails every 6-inches.

9. Attach shelving to desired location throughout the interior of the cabinet. Measure up from the base of the cabinet every 12-inches. Attach four shelving brackets per shelf, one to support each corner and set shelves in place.

10. Attach the hinges to the door. Measure in 6-inches from each end of the 17 1/2-inch by 83 1/2-inch plywood piece. Attach a hinge at these locations. Attach the third hinge at the direct center of the plywood.

11. Measure up 6 1/4-inch from the base of the cabinet and place the bottom hinge at this location. Attach hinges with a power screwdriver and hinge screws to the front of the cabinet so there is 1/4-inch along the head and base of the cabinet to ensure easy movement.
