Decorate A Single Room

Decorate any room according to your design style.

If all you have is a single room to call your own, decorate it to reflect the best features of your design preferences. Own your space with color, furniture and accessories. As with larger, multiroom spaces, painting the walls with color, changing the flooring and then adding furniture, lighting, fixtures and accents result in instantaneous room transformations. Since the space is a single room, stick to a single design theme since a lack of design cohesion can make the room feel too busy. Start with an inspirational piece; a piece that you would enjoy looking at every day for a long period of time. Work around this inspiration piece to put together the elements of your single room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint the walls. Select a color from the inspiration piece for the walls. Peruse paint sample cards at the store to get a feel for how the color looks on the wall before settling on a color.

Paint the edges and corners of the walls with a paintbrush and then paint the rest of the walls with paint rollers. It is a time-saver to paint the walls first before dealing with the flooring, especially if you are planning to replace the flooring. This way, you will not have a paint mess to clean up on your new floor.

2. Paint the door and window molding a contrasting color. If the walls are a light color, paint the trim a darker color for a bold trim, or paint it white to soften these borders.

For darker color walls, painting the molding a dark color makes the room feel very dark. Instead, highlight the dark or bold walls with a light door and window trim color.

3. Install the new flooring once the paint has dried. Choose from hardwood floors, carpeting or tile for your room's flooring. The choice depends on both your preference and the room's function. So while carpet on the floor works well for a bedroom or a study, it is not the first choice for a sewing or craft room since so many supplies and material scraps end up on the floor.

4. Select the furniture for your single room. This also depends on the room's function -- decorate it as a bedroom, an office or a sitting room. Coordinate the furniture's appearance with the colors and textures used in the room.

5. Arrange the furniture in the room in a functional and efficient layout that does not obstruct the flow throughout the room.

6. Accessorize your room with wall hangings that coordinate with the d cor, pillow accents for a bed or a couch, live plants and decorative accents.
