Home Office Builtin Furniture Ideas

Built-in home office furniture helps save floor space.

When creating a home office, design the furniture to help separate home and work lives. Building furniture into the office itself creates a certain permanence of work space, which keeps you concentrated on your work. Having a plan about the layout and design of your home office before construction begins is worthwhile as it will save you time and money and allow you to start working from home more quickly and efficiently. Does this Spark an idea?

Built-in Shelves

Build shelves into the walls of the office, for books, binders and other helpful work items, so that they do not extend out into the workspace. A custom bookshelf behind the desk keeps everything you need in one place, giving all of your materials a natural organization. The shelves can be classically rectangular or square, depending on the look and style of the office. However, they must be deep enough to hold binders and larger research books, depending on your home business.

Built-in Desk

A variety of desks can be built into a home office, though building one in the center of the room to follow feng shui directives might be a little risky, in case the room does not remain a home office. A hinged desk that folds down against the wall is an inventive solution, especially when the wall is covered with wood paneling. A built-in bookshelf with a fold-down or slide-out section for a desk in the corner is also a good option. This creates shelves and desk in one piece of built-in office furniture.

Built-in Drawers

Rather then lugging in heavy steel filing cabinets, create a design that allows drawers to slide in and out of the wall itself. This produces more floor space. Other drawers can be built in for supplies, tools and other office equipment.

Built-in Computer Workstation

A cabinet can be built into the wall with a cover to hide a desktop computer monitor and hard drive, with a sliding tray that holds the keyboard and a space to sit at in front of the computer. Cubbies and other drawers can be built into the wall around it, sized for computer speakers, printers and software packages you'll need to stow somewhere. It's important for all computer hardware and accessories to be stowed in one place so that they aren't misplaced when you need them.
