Counterstrike Launch Options

Alter Counter-Strike options depending on your computer's power.

Valve's "Counter-Strike" is an online team-based First-Person Shooter allowing players to work in teams or competitively to fulfill mission objectives in 3D environments based on the company's game "Half-Life." While the game contains an "Options" menu for hanging basic game parameters, you can change these options by altering the "Launch Options" section of the game's "Properties" menu within the Steam game-launch software.

Mouse Options

"Counter-Strike" contains its own mouse sensitivity and button settings, but you can override these in the launch options. Adding the launch option "-noforcemaccel" forces the game to use the computer's default acceleration settings, and "-noforcemparms" forces the game to use the same mouse button configurations and sensitivity as the Windows defaults. Adding "-noforcemspd" forces "Counter-Strike" to use the same mouse speed as the desktop default.

Video Settings

If "Counter-Strike" is defaulting to a monitor resolution in which you prefer not to play or which isn't supported by your monitor, add the "-w" and "-h" launch options, followed by the horizontal and vertical resolutions you want to use. For example, to force a low-resolution, memory-conserving resolution of 640 x 480, type in the launch options "-w 640" and "-h 480." Similarly, you can force the monitor refresh rate by specifying "-freq 60" for a frequency of 60 Hertz, for example. Force the game to run in full-screen mode by adding the "-full" launch option, or launch "Counter-Strike" as a windowed application on your desktop with the "-windowed" option.

Video Plugin

Choose the 3D graphics plugin for "Counter-Strike" by setting "-gl" for OpenGL mode, "-d3d" for Direct3D, or "-soft" for un-enhanced software-based rendering. Render 3D graphics with Microsoft's DirectX plugin by specifying the launch option "dx" followed by the version number, excluding the decimal point. For example, launch the game in DirectX 9.0 by specifying "-ds 90," or DirectX 8.1 with the option "-dx 81.

Other Options

Set the depth of color detail to 16-bit or 32-bit with the options "-16bpp" or "-32bpp" respectively. Specify the amount of memory to be used by the entire application with "-heapsize [memory in kilobytes]," or the memory devoted to the game's options console with "-zone [memory in kilobytes]." Don't alter these unless you are familiar with memory options. Alter the game's communication protocols by turning off the UDP portion of the TCP/IP protocol with "-noip," or disabling the IPX/SPX protocol with "-noipx." Reduce memory usage by disabling joystick support with "-nojoy" or disabling font anti-aliasing with "-noaafonts." You can fix many sound issues by specifying "-wavonly," which disables the Direct Sound plugin. Reset all video and audio settings to the game's default with "-autoconfig" or open a logged session for debugging purposes with "-condebug."
