Build A Model Of A California Mission

Use red, brown and white paint to mimick the colors of a mission.

Most fourth graders in California will be asked to make a model of a California mission as part of their history course. It may seem daunting for students who are not enthusiastic about model building or arts and crafts. Building a simple model out of cardboard will produce an individual result that looks like the student spent more time on the model than those who use a ready-made kit from a craft store.

Instructions

1. Cut four rectangles from a cardboard box so all are the same height with one pair longer than the other. This will make walls for a rectangular-shaped building. Cut "U" shaped arches into the longer set of rectangles.

2. Attach the walls to a plant tray with hot glue, orienting the walls so they form a rectangular-shaped building frame. Let the longer sides be oriented so the archways are open at the bottom, forming an upside-down "U." Glue along the sides of the walls to attach to each other. Hold in place until set.

3. Cut another cardboard rectangle a few inches longer and wider than the area of the top of the rectangular building. Tear away the top layer of paper from the cardboard rectangle and discard, using the textured bottom layer for the roof. Crease in half so the long sides touch with the textured part facing up. Hot glue the roof onto the building.

4. Paint the roof and walls with a mixture of red, brown and white paints to achieve the desired colors.

5. Fill in the area around the mission by applying a thin layer of white glue and attaching fake moss and lichen to represent grass and bushes.
