A courtyard provides a space for intimate conversation while pleasing the eye.
By definition, a courtyard is an open space. Often a courtyard is surrounded by walls or buildings. At religious institutions, a courtyard contains walkways that are covered and is referred to as a cloister. A courtyard can be a common place, or it can be a place of solitude. The approach to creating your own courtyard is moderately easy. The result, with some planning and ingenuity, is a courtyard that is both welcoming and peaceful. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Choose the location and function of the courtyard. A multifunctional space offers opportunities to use the space much more than if you choose a specific use. Using a measuring tape, measure a space that you feel provides an adequate area for plantings, seating and water features.
2. Determine the type of walkways for your courtyard. Brick, cobblestone and cement paving stones are common choices that add to the ambiance of a courtyard. Measure, and then mark with stakes where the courtyard and its walkways will be located to determine the amount of brick, cobblestone or pavers you need. Install the materials or hire a professional to do it for you.
3. Designate a portion of space for a seating area. Furnish with table and chairs or a simple bench. You may wish to provide seating in different areas of the courtyard or one specific space for seating. Providing seating encourages visitors to sit and enjoy the serenity of the space.
4. Add plants. If buildings do not surround your area, use shrubbery to create an enclosed space. Plant a tree to provide shade. Once you have completed your boundary plantings, add color to the space using potted flowering plants and in-ground plantings.
5. Add a statue to the space to create visual interest. Add a water feature to provide a soothing sound for your visitors. A water feature can be especially helpful if your courtyard is located near a busy street as it can diminish the sounds of passing traffic.
