California Catamaran Sailing Schools

Catamaran sailing lessons are offered throughout California.

A catamaran ship is very similar to a standard sailboat except that it has two hulls that are joined by a single deck, and some people believe that catamaran sailing is more difficult to learn than standard sailing. Most California sailing schools offer catamaran lessons in addition to traditional sailing lessons.

UCLA Marine Aquatic Center

The University of California at Los Angeles Marine Aquatic Center, based in Marina del Rey, offers catamaran sailing lessons. The school has been teaching sailing lessons for more than 60 years and is designed to teach both beginners and seasoned sailors. The school curriculum begins with the basics of educating a successful catamaran sailor, which include learning to identify the parts of the boat, including the hull, keel, bow pulpit, stern and backstay. The school also teaches each sailor the functions of various parts of the catamaran sailboat, such as the rudder, cleats, Cunningham, tiller and wheel. Students will be evaluated on their boating knowledge and placed in appropriate classes ranging from Introduction to Sailing to Outside Ocean Sailing and Sailing IV: Catamaran Sailing.
