Build A King Size Captain'S Bed

Is there a problem with lack of space in your bedroom? Perhaps you have your heart set on a king size bed, but there is not enough room for this large bed and the dressers and chests for storage. The answer to this dilemma can be a king size captain's bed that you can build yourself with medium carpentry skills. Build a King Size Captain's Bed


1. A standard king size mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, the bed will be built 78 inches wide by 82 inches long by 32 inches high.


2. Cut eight two inch by four inch lumber at 82 inches long. For the ends cut four two inch by four inch pieces 78 inches long. Cut eight two inch by four inch pieces at 32 inches long. Cut four sheets of the ¾ inch plywood at 82 inches long. Trim two of these sheets to 30 inches wide. Cut two pieces of plywood 78 inches by 32 inches for the ends of the bed platform. For the sides of the bed cut four 12 inch by 32 and two 10 inch by 32 inch plywood pieces.


3. Make two frames using two of the 82 inch pieces and two of the 78 inch pieces, forming a box. Attach at the corners with screws. Square the box up and install corner brackets in each interior corner. Place two of the 82 inch pieces, evenly spaced inside each box. Attach to the end sections with screws and install corner brackets.


4. Attach the 32 inches pieces to each interior corner of one of the boxes using carriage bolts. Attach the second box frame to the other ends of the 32 inch pieces with carriage bolts. Install two of the 32 inch pieces on each long side, evenly spaced to form the center supports. Attach with carriage bolts.


5. Attach one of the four foot wide pieces of plywood and one of the 30 inch wide pieces to the top and bottom of the frame.


6. Using screws attach the plywood ends to the bed framework. Attach (one) 12 inch by 32 inch plywood sections at each corner (long side). Then attach one of the 10 inch sections to the center of each long side. This will leave openings for the drawer installations.


7. Install the drawers (two) in each opening following manufacturer's directions to install slides.


8. Apply corner trim to the outside corners and install casters to the bottom four corners. Attach drawer face panels to the foot section of the bed.


9. The finished projected is now ready to paint or stain.
