Wide Trim To Kitchen Cabinets

Add Wide Trim to Kitchen Cabinets

Plain, boring kitchen cabinets that lack character don't have to be part of your décor. Beef up the style in your kitchen by adding wide trim to kitchen cabinets. Wide trim comes flat or engraved, meaning you can choose a style that's Victorian, contemporary or anything in between. The average cost of unfinished kitchen cabinet trim is $15 for each linear foot (as of 2010). You can buy wide kitchen cabinet trim made of MDF (medium density fiberboard) if you plan to paint it or high-quality wood if you want to apply stain. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine your style. Installing wide trim around the edge of your kitchen cabinet doors will help them stand out, or you can add wide trim to kitchen cabinets in geometrical shapes for a modern look. To achieve a mission style feel in your kitchen, create small boxes in the middle of your kitchen cabinet doors using wide kitchen cabinet trim. Determining the style of trim you want is a matter of personal preference.

2. Take your kitchen cabinet doors off of your cabinets.

3. Measure your cabinet doors where you want to apply the trim. Proper measurements helps you know how long to cut each piece of wide kitchen cabinet trim.

4. Cut each piece using a jig saw or a circular saw so it's the appropriate measurement. Use a miter saw to cut each piece at an angle so the pieces of wide kitchen cabinet trim butt up against each other to make a flush seam.

5. Hold your unfinished kitchen cabinet trim up against the kitchen cabinet door in the location where you want it installed.

6. Hammer brads, which look like headless nails, through the trim and into the cabinet to hold the trim securely in place.

7. Use a counter setter tool to drive the brad further into the trim so it is hidden. Place the thin point of the counter setter on the brad, then hit the back end of your counter setter with a hammer.

8. Fill the small hole left when the brad drives into the trim with spackle or wood filler. Apply a small amount with a putty knife and smooth it out.

9. Re-install your kitchen cabinet doors.

10. Paint or stain your wood trim and kitchen cabinets to your desired color.
