Instructions

French Country Style

1. Select paint colors. The French country style typically uses deep, rich colors such as terracotta, yellow, gold, deep red, rust, green and blue. Textured walls are also common. A faux finish may be used to add a textured look.

2. Choose flooring. The most common types of flooring in a French country home are wood, stone or ceramic tiles. Ceramic tiles are often a deep color such as terracotta. Wood floors are often natural with a rustic feel.

3. Select wood cabinets and furniture. The French country style often uses natural materials. Dark wood cabinets and furniture is common. In the kitchen, a butcher block counter top may be used instead of granite and a harvest table may be used in an eat-in kitchen. If you prefer lighter cabinets and furniture, painted wood is also commonly used. White and green are two colors often used to paint wooden dressers or tables and chairs. The distressed look may also be used on kitchen cabinets.

4. Add other furnishings and fabrics. The French country look is all about mixing and matching. The furnishings don't need to come as a set. Select pieces you find at flea markets or boutiques that highlight the rustic feel. Fabrics are also commonly mixed and matched. Floral and checkered patterns may be used in the same room.

5. Accessorize the home by adding the final touches. Kitchen accessories include ceramics, olive oils and fresh flowers on the counter. Accessories should add a pop of color such as a bright yellow ceramic pitcher and dishware. Living room accessories include baskets, floral pillows and wrought iron accents.

Parisian Style

6. Select colors. Parisian colors may be neutral, such as off-white or cream, or vibrant jewel colors, such as royal blue and crimson red. Decide if you prefer a more neutral palette or want to go with bold colors.

7. Choose furnishings. Parisian style furniture is typically very elegant and timeless. Finely carved dark wood furniture is often used. Sofas and chairs tend to have graceful lines. Velvet upholstery adds an upscale look. A bistro table and chairs may be used in an eat-in kitchen.

8. Add accents. The accents will add the final touches to complete the Parisian look. Long, flowing silk drapes with swagged valances are often used to add an elegant look to windows. Crystal chandeliers are common. Ornate rugs may be placed on hardwood floors. Gilded trim or moldings add a touch of gold to finish the look of elegance. An antique mirror or large oil painting can be hung on the wall. In the end, the home should have an uncluttered, elegant, sophisticated look with a few select accents.
