Refinish Colonialstyle Recliners

Recliners, rockers and gliders can be easily refinished for lasting use.

Colonial-style recliners can add an air of history to your front porch or living room, but after years of use even these durable chairs can need refinishing. Often they are crafted with wood, so refinishing them can be as simple as removing the cushions and sanding away the old wood finish, along with the scrapes and bruises of everyday wear and tear. Investing just a little time in refinishing your furniture can transform an unsightly recliner into an asset to your home's decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the cushions from the recliner. Cover any fabric or metal with plastic sheeting, using masking tape to hold it in place. Additionally, make sure that any metal or moving joints are covered with plastic sheeting or plastic wrap to protect them from sawdust and wood stain.

2. Install medium-grit sandpaper into the palm sander and sand off the existing coat of wood stain. To avoid unsightly scrapes, chips and uneven surfaces, do not apply pressure to the palm sander. Only use the medium grit sandpaper to remove the wood finish. Do not sand rounded edges using the palm sander.

3. Install fine-grit sandpaper into the palm sander and carefully smooth out the wood by moving the sander in small circular motions. Make sure that all scrapes from the chair's wear and tear are smoothed out during this stage in sanding.

4. Sand away the old wood finish and any blemishes on rounded edges by hand using the medium- and fine-grit sandpaper. Make sure that there are no visible pieces of the previous wood stain or wood finishing on the chair before moving on.

5. Using a vacuum or a damp cloth, remove all of the wood dust from the recliner.

6. Apply an even coat of a preferred oil-based stain, following the directions on the container. Apply the stain with the grain, and use a rag to wipe off any excess to create a smooth finish. If you want the wood stain to be darker, apply more coats until you are satisfied with the color. Allow the wood to dry overnight before removing the plastic protection and replacing the cushions.
